corfu island

welcome to LEFKIMI town Corfu (Kerkyra)

The region of Lefkimi is located on the lowest part of the island, 42 km from the city of Corfu. Lefkimi is one of the most traditional areas of corfu island, with narrow streets, tall houses, small squares, churches and traditional cafes.
It is built on a fertile plain with vines, olive trees and horticultural products. A small river, shelter for the fishing boats and the caiques of the natives, separates the area in two. The region of Lefkmmi is overgrown with olive trees old as the hills and vineyards that produce its famous wine. Traditions are still maintained; you will meet old women dressed with the traditional lefkimi clothes.

lefkimi constitutes of five main villages (Riglades, Potami, Melikia and Kavos) and villages around them (Spartera, Dragotina, Neohori, Bastatika, Paleohori, Kritika and Vitalades). Each Lefkimi village has something unique to demonstrate:
Riglades has traditional mansions and a special folk architecture. It has Byzantine origin; the name comes from the family Rigli that lived in the region in the middle ages. The region Alikes took its name from the salt marshes that exist there and gathered salt in older years. This region is under protection, as it has a very important role in the maintenance of the flora and the fauna of Corfu.
Potami (river) located roughly in the middle of lefkimi is one of the most traditional villages and it is named after the river that practically separates the region of lefkimi in two parts, crosses the village and leads to the sea. On both sides of the river, on the slated streets, there are cafes, restaurants and bars. The fishing boats and caiques moored there add to the picturesqueness of the landscape. At the point where the river meets the sea is the beach of Bouka. It is a beautiful beach with fine golden sand and shallow waters. You should not fail to visit the churches of Virgin Mary the Leader and Agios Spiridonas.
Melikia are the next village that you will meet going south. It owes its name to the family Meliki that lived in the region since the 15th century. There you will find the church of Saint Isavros with rare wall paintings and pictures of the 16th century. The beaches of Itia, of St Nikolaos and Foukario with golden sand and shallow waters are ideal for children and serene familial vacations.
Kavos is the last village of lefkimi and is the most popular tourist destination. Kavos beach is 1.5 klm long and demonstrates swift tourist growth in the last years.
